Celebrating the Red, White & Blue with a Retro Flair

28 Jun

Can any of you believe that next week will be the Fourth of July already? We can’t! But what we can believe is that we MUST bring the best of our dresses out to help us celebrate this occasion. Give us any reason to shop and style an outfit!

We are going to show you two JBR dresses that are perfect, as well as a bathing suit from Fables by Barrie, and some ideas we got from Pinterest on how you can celebrate the Fourth in your vintage style!

The first dress we would like to show you is the Belle dress by Bernie Dexter. This classic swing dress reminds us of everything fun about summer. The red and white gingham is reminiscent of a picnic blanket or table cloth, and while it may not seem like the best idea to wear something that would be used for a BBQ as a dress, we think this is a fun twist!

Pair this dress with the right accessories and you will look like you are the living embodiment of the 1950’s. We would suggest pairing this with a white beaded or chain necklace and some stud earrings. For shoes you can do a small heeled tan or nude pump or wedge (depending on the event you are wearing this too). If you are planning on wearing your hair up be sure to add a large flower accent, again we like the idea of red, white, or even blue to tie it in!

If you don’t want to wear red then try this blue number by Hell Bunny, it is their Mariam Dress. The Mariam comes in three different colors, blue, red, and black, but we like the idea of wearing the blue one on the fourth!

The large polka dots on this dress really make it more of a stand out piece. Most dresses have the smaller polka dots, but this has the bold polka dots that can’t be mistaken! For accessorizing this dress we love pairing it with some wooden looking bracelets and silver earrings. We also like adding a large costume ring to it! For the hair you can either add a flower, or you can tie a scarf to create a head band or accent hair tie!

This is one of our favorite red, white, and blue inspired bathing suits from Fables by Barrie! It is the Skipper Bikini Top and Bottom! We love Fables by Barrie because all of their bikini tops and bottoms can be mixed and matched according to your preferences! For this choice, we like that you can wear the boy shorts and they have added the details of the anchor buttons! It makes the whole suit feel inspired by the Navy, and it is a different way to rock patriotic colors for the Fourth of July.

An option for you ladies who prefer to wear a one piece is the Hazel bathing suit. Again we see the attention to detail that we have come to love from Fables by Barrie. The same anchor buttons are added the the drop waist, but there are also the red and white striped details added to the otherwise blue bathing suit. But the best part is the added skirting on the bottom. It makes the swimsuit so girly and festive! You would want to wear this while floating from the grill to the pool. No need to add a cover-up!

We got this great idea from Pinterest, via! You know how crazy things can get if you are the one hosting the Fourth of July gathering, so a way to make things a little less chaotic is to do pre-set cocktails! You mix the cocktails you would like and then pour them into mason jars, screw on the lids and then stuff them in your bucket of ice. Guests can help themselves and you don’t have to constantly be behind the bar mixing! And even if you won’t be serving alcohol, you can use these for your juices, or other drinks! Just add a straw and go!

If you want to bring the red, white, and blue theme to your food you can re-create the American flag with fruit skewers. Here the person has used blueberries, strawberries, and bananas, but we would suggest swapping out the bananas for white nectarines, pears, or apples so they don’t brown as quickly. This is much more fun than the boring fruit salad mixture!

However you are choosing to celebrate the fourth, we hope that you are able to bring your love of vintage to your celebration! Feel free to tweet us and tell us how you are celebrating, or leave us a comment!

Summer Solstice Celebration

22 Jun

The summer solstice was yesterday and we could not be more excited! We are in the process of making a move to a store-front where you can stop by and visit us (for you Southern Californian fans), today is the official launch of WordPress (so ditch that blogspot page, and make sure to book mark this page) and today is the day we are ditching our pants and living for our dresses!

Yes, that’s right ladies, we are leaving our pants to be shoved under our beds and only wearing dresses or skirts. That being said, we want you to know which dress we are obsessed about:

We cannot get enough of the Bettie Page Rosanna Dress! When we first saw this dress at Magic in February we knew that our fans would adore it, and so far everyone has.

Part of the appeal of this dress is the print. The designers picked a print that really brings you back to the days of home made apple pie, sock hops, and drive in theaters. We have this on our must have list because it is a light cotton material that breaths well in those hot and sticky summer months. Because it is a swing, you definitely get the sun dress feeling from it.

JBR Clothing will be heading to the Hootenanny in Irvine, California Saturday, July 7, and we were all fighting over who would get to wear it….sadly no one won because we are selling them like snow cones on a summer day. But we have big plans for the places that you can wear this number out!

This dress would be great for a first date! Has the hunk in the apartment below you finally gotten the nerve to ask you out? We say wear this! It is cute, flirty, and fun. The Rosanna has an innocence in it with the bow on the front of the neckline, but it is still mature with the low neckline and the cinched waist. You could also wear this to a luncheon with your girlfriends, we promise they will ask you where you got it. You can also use it for any of those upcoming weddings you have been invited to, a backyard BBQ, or a trip to the museum.

This is a purchase you won’t regret, because you will wear it all summer. And yes, we do sound a little like an ad, but come on, we really can’t help it if we really love what we sell!

We want all of you to love what we sell too! Have you already made a summer dress purchase from us? Which dress did you choose? Tweet us with some of your pictures of you wearing your favorite summer dresses, and no, they don’t have to be from JBR Clothing, we just want to see your retro style in the works during these hot summer days!

Retro-Fitted Summer

6 Jun

June is officially here and we are ready to break out our bathing suits, sandals, and sun-dresses! We wanted to make sure that all of our favorite fans are as prepared for the summer season as we are, so we are giving you a quick guide to make sure you are able to bring your love of vintage with you to the beach, lake, pool, or beyond!

One easy way to prepare yourself for a retro-fitted summer is to purchase a straw item. We love using straw purses or shoulder bags to carry all our necessary items.

This purse from is a great option. It is called the Straw Dangle Tote in natural. It is perfect for throwing your latest gossip magazine in, some sunblock and a bottle of water for your quick trip to the pool.

The next item on the list is a FABULOUS hat. We are talking over the top, large brimmed hats, the kind that make you look like a startlet on vacation in Palm Springs.

While we can make plenty of suggestion of stores that carry such hats, we have found some of our most memorable sun hats at weekend swap meets, flea markets, or consignment stores. Our philosophy is, why spend a fortune on a hat we will be exposing to water? But a hat is a must, it helps protect your face from UV lights as well as making you look a little more mysterious as you lay out and people watch from beneath your brim.

The last thing you need in order to be ready for the summer is a perfect swimsuit. What’s that, a groan? Oh no ladies, when you are looking to carry your retro vintage style over to the summer season look forward to finding a swimsuit!

While you may think that Audrey is wearing a dress, she is not! she is wearing a swimsuit! For anyone that knows vintage, it is all about embracing a woman’s¬†silhouette¬†and making it look good. You do not need to over-expose yourself to look like a bombshell.¬†And don’t be scandalized, you can still wear a two-piece, there are so many options you won’t believe it!

For your one piece ladies, we have some great options (which will hopefully be brought to you by JBR soon!). The above is the Audrey swimsuit by Fables by Barrie. This bathing suit is a classic cut, where the backside fully covers your rear and the front ends at the top of your legs. It provides slightly more coverage on your lower half than most other swimsuits, that are normally cut high on the rear and thigh.

Another one we love from Fables by Barrie, is the Lauren! This one, like the Audrey, features a sweetheart neckline, halter top, and comes to the tops of your leg. What we loved about this one is the houndstooth print on it! It makes it seem like such a formal swimsuit! This is one that you would want to take with you if you are planing on going to a high end spa or resort! The red contrast on the waist gives it that bright pop you need for the summer months!

And now for all you two piece loving ladies, don’t worry, I didn’t forget about you!

Here you have the¬†Sophie Top in Black and White, with the¬†Amelia Bikini Bottoms in Black and White. We love these two pieces because they are close replica’s to what the women in the 1940’s and 1950’s wore. The bikini bottoms come up higher on the waist, but not in a fashion that would remind you of an older woman. These are very young and flirty designs.

The other great thing about these bottoms is that you can mix and match them with a top from any swimsuit! If you are going for the vintage look, just buy a pair of these bottoms and take them with you when you go shopping to find a top you like! Pair it with a bandeau top, halter, or any other combination that tickles your fancy.

Just because it is the summer time, it doesn’t mean that you have to leave your vintage lifestyle by the wayside! No, what we say is find a way to carry it over to the warmer months!

If there is a way you make your love of vintage stand out in the summer leave us a comment and tell us how! We love to hear how you are creating your own vintage revolution.
